Hurricane Harvey Relief

Hurricane+Harvey+Relief

Jacob Mercier, Senior Producer

This year, Student Council and The Community Service Council have teamed up to provide relief for the victims of Hurricane Harvey. For the first time ever, due to the catastrophic results of this natural disaster, the school administration is upping the amount of service hours available for a cash donation to 10 hours. 1 Hour is equal to $25.

This CSC and StuCo partnership allowed for both student organizations to put all resources together to help a Houston school in need. The groups collectively chose Northside High School because they demonstrated a high level of need, and many students didn’t have the resources at home to move forward. This campaign is strictly a donation-based campaign, though, and for one of the first times, district-wide. Yes, all families with students all the way from Kindergarten to 12th grade are open to donations. As this is a donation-based campaign, the groups explained that that’s why they chose to have an online fundraiser. By going to bit.ly/HPHarveyFund, you can donate directly to those in need.

Many have expressed concern that big organizations like The Red Cross aren’t allocating appropriate amounts of funds to those in need. By donating in the StuCo/CSC campaign, you can be sure all of your money will be going to the place it is intended to go, and to the people it is intended to help. Even as time goes by since the destruction following Harvey, the damage still remains, and many south Texas students are still out of school. As national news and publicity for Harvey wanes, it is so important to keep providing relief for our fellow Texans.
